Your Heart in Numbers: How Old Is Your Heart Really?

Our heart is a true powerhouse. Around the clock, it pumps blood throughout the body, supplies our organs with oxygen, and keeps us alive. Without a break. Without a pause button.
That is why a healthy cardiovascular system is the key to energy, quality of life, and longevity. Yet the reality is serious: Cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke remain among the leading causes of death in Switzerland.
What many people don't know is that your personal risk can be estimated surprisingly accurately using scientific models based on decades of data from millions of people.
Heart age – a number that matters to all of us.
The Great Unknown: Your Cardiovascular Risk
Most people have little idea of how healthy their heart really is. You may feel perfectly well, but risk factors such as high blood pressure or unfavorable cholesterol levels often cause no noticeable symptoms.
In addition, many people avoid the topic because they fear the results. It's easier to ignore the problem than to face it. But what you don't know can harm your health. Without understanding your risk, you cannot take action to reduce it.
Heart Age Instead of Guesswork: A Simple Calculation
Here's the good news: Using the SCORE2 model (for adults up to about 70 years of age) and SCORE2-OP (for older adults), your individual risk of developing cardiovascular disease within the next ten years can be estimated quickly, reliably, and based on solid scientific evidence.
The calculation is based on the following factors:
- Risk region (Switzerland is classified as a low-risk region)
- Age
- Sex
- Systolic blood pressure
- Total cholesterol
- HDL cholesterol
- Smoking status
The result not only provides a percentage risk but also your so-called heart age—an especially intuitive way of understanding your cardiovascular health.
For example, a 60-year-old woman who smokes and has certain risk factors may have a heart age of 76. That feels much more tangible than an abstract percentage—and often provides much stronger motivation to take action.
